How the odds work in Pokémon

You draw seven cards to start, then set six Prize cards aside face down. Both players draw at the start of every turn, including the player going first, so the turn order does not change how many cards you have seen.

The Prize cards are a random six of your deck, so they do not change the odds of drawing a card by a given turn. What they change is whether a copy is locked away until you take a Prize. With one copy in a 60-card deck, that happens 10% of the time; with four copies, the chance that all four are prized is tiny.

Mulligans for a hand with no Basic Pokémon are not included: the odds shown are for the first hand you draw.

Rules reference: Pokemon TCG rulebook: setup and "draw a card" at the start of every turn.

Frequently asked questions

What are the odds my one-of is prized?

Six of your 60 cards are Prizes, so a single copy is prized exactly 10% of the time.

Do Prize cards change my draw odds?

No. The Prizes are a random part of the deck, so on average they take your copies away as often as they take any other card.

Does the player going first draw a card?

Yes. In the Pokémon TCG both players draw at the start of every turn, including the first.
